It looks like the first week of 2017 will be a very active one weather-wise. A series of wet storms will move through the region on and off through the rest of the week. In the short term, a cold low pressure system will bring an increase of snow Tuesday afternoon as it catches some moisture coming out of the pacific. A Winter Storm Warning is up for the mountains and a Winter Weather Advisory is posted for the valleys Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, with the possibility of a few inches in Reno and a foot or more up in the mountains.
Temperatures warm up enough Wednesday so that snow could turn to rain showers in the valleys, and rain or snow remains likely into Thursday before drying temporarily Friday. As we head into the weekend, it looks like an atmospheric river type of storm system will move into the region, which depending on how warm it is could result in heavy snow or rain for the mountains, and likely reasonably heavy rain for the valleys.
