The end of fall break for the kids in Washoe County should finish up a lot nicer than it started. A building ridge of high pressure will keep pumping up our afternoon highs, to the mid-70s on Friday and peaking in the low 80s on Saturday. A dry cold front drops down from the north on Sunday kicking up some wind and dropping our temperatures by 10 or more degrees, although sunny skies should stay in place well into the next week.

COld Springs 3

A viewer reported that her temperature out in Cold Springs was already 30 degrees. Another viewer took issue, saying it was 40 degrees at her Cold Springs home at the same time. Believe it or not, the temperature out there, and in most valleys, can vary that much. Micro-climates can make a huge difference. I don’t know exactly where either lives in Cold Springs, but I would guess one is low and the other is high in the valley there. The cold air pools down low, and if one was still above the inversion when she looked at the thermometer, then it could have easily shown that kind of difference. Even local things like a paved driveway versus a gravel one on a calm night can make several degrees difference. So there may not have been an error at all… they both could’ve been right.
