While we will stay dry through the rest of the week, the temperatures will bob around a bit as we head into the weekend. Wednesday will start out sunny and will likely see a few afternoon clouds, but temperatures will still reach the mid-80s in the valley. Mostly sunny skies will continue through the weekend, but a trough of low pressure will move through Saturday and Sunday dropping our highs back into the 70s and kicking up some stiff breezes. By the first of next week, the ridge builds back in and high temperatures build back with it into the 80s.
Catherine Cochrane wrote in with this question: “The barometer is the one thing from the weather report I have never understood. What does it do and why does it matter? Can you make this the subject of an article?” I absolutely can. In a nutshell the barometer measures the pressure of the air, and in another nutshell, the pressure of the air is a measure of the “weight” of the column of air above the spot from which you measure. But why does this matter? I will tackle that tomorrow.
