Fall has definitely arrived. The first wave will be moving out of the region Thursday with a few residual showers and high temperatures falling to the mid-60s. Temperatures rebound on Friday to about 70 degrees with dry conditions and partly cloudy skies. The next storm system digs through the Pacific Northwest over the weekend, dropping temperatures again into the 60s, and giving us a slight chance of some showers Saturday. As skies clear out late Sunday, we can expect some very cold temperatures Monday morning, and the colder microclimates will likely see some significant frosts.
Hi Mike,
Every summer when you are on the news telling us that the temperature will continue to be above 100 degrees for several more days, our family of four picks their date on which we will be able to see the first snow on Mt. Rose.
Normally the winner is clear and that person gets the bragging rights. This year things are unclear and we need your help! We are traveling and saw that the white stuff was on Rose on October 3rd, however the newspaper said it was likely hail. Now we believe that we can really use your professional input to make sure that we do not have a year in our records that is causing a family feud every Thanksgiving for the next few years. 🙂 Can we hand the winning date to our oldest daughter? Please help! 🙂 Esther and Joe

Hi Ester and Joe… That’s actually a tough question. I think that the white that you did see yesterday early in the day was likely hail, but there could have been some snow mixed in with it. I do know late last night (11 PM show) it was snowing lightly up on Slide, but I don’t know if any of that stuck. Looking at the mountain cams today there is no snow visible. So depending on your criteria, the daughter either can or can’t start bragging. I cannot confirm that any actual snow accumulated up on Rose, although I can say it is likely that some snow did fall.
I guess I will wait until I see who pays me the most before I make the final call. 🙂

Thanks for your reply Mike! We have put the possibility of bribes on the table to swing the professional call in their direction, however we have no offers of a future first born. We will call it a win for our oldest!!
Thanks for your feedback and we might be pinging you again for future judging calls :).
